There is a never-ending SALE in the Netherlands. It tempts us to buy more than we need, encouraged by low prices. With the help of marketers and graphic designers, this commercial system triggers our subconscious. SALE has become a way to stimulate mass consumption, instead a way to clear out old collections to make room for new ones. These discounts are attractive, but we forget that cheap items are often made under horrible conditions.
Graduation show at the Willem de Kooning Academy.
Dutch Design Week, 2018.
Blue City Rotterdam, 2019.
Marieke den Ouden is a designer living in Arnhem. During her studies in graphic and social design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, she looked at the relationship between the Netherland’s clothing industry, consumerism, and graphic design.
Photography is an important aspect in her work, and wherever she goes - the camera goes too. Can’t find Marieke on land? Probably because she’s sailing across the ocean on a pirate ship, teaching youngsters about sustainability
