Each year the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst (the Rotterdam Academy of Architecture and Urban Design) makes a book about their graduation students.
This edition is about what design education can do about this climate challenge, with interviews and portraits the story has been told.
I was responsible for the concept and design of this edition. It's made during the time of COVID-19, in this time students were graduating partly home. I was making mock-ups at all possible corners of their room. I translated this idea into photos of little spaces created out of paper to visualize this idea.
Marieke den Ouden is a graphic designer based in Arnhem, working in the field of social design with a strong focus on language, sustainability, and public engagement. Her multidisciplinary practice spans motion, editorial, and photography, with storytelling at its core.
Marieke is interested in how design can make complex systems visible and accessible, using visual language to foster inclusive, critical conversations. She draws on the concept of public pedagogy - learning beyond formal education - to create work that invites interaction, reflection, and collective meaning-making.
She previously worked at the design agency De Designpolitie and the international design platform What Design Can Do, contributing to socially engaged design projects for clients such as Movies that Matter, the Dutch Government and the Rotterdamse Academie van Bouwkunst
Her current clients include UNESCO, the Municipality of Arnhem, and the Dutch Design Foundation. Marieke also serves as a board member at Crafts Council Netherlands, supporting sustainable practices and cross-disciplinary dialogue. In the summer months, she mentors aboard traditional tall ships, continuing her exploration of slow, embodied learning.

Marieke den Ouden is a designer living in Arnhem. During her studies in graphic and social design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, she looked at the relationship between the Netherland’s clothing industry, consumerism, and graphic design.
Photography is an important aspect in her work, and wherever she goes - the camera goes too. Can’t find Marieke on land? Probably because she’s sailing across the ocean on a pirate ship, teaching youngsters about sustainability
