Each What Design Can Do Live event is a beehive of change-makers from multidisciplinary backgrounds, where connections are made and a cross-pollination of ideas takes place. 

For the 2022 festival, the design system was developed with the imagery of medieval heraldry as inspiration. With abstract and figurative shapes based on the concept of global warming, we created patterns visualising this century's problems. The patterns were transformed into a flag that represents the idea of a unified design front, fighting the problems that the world faces today. The design language has been translated to social media, an outdoor campaign and a stage design. A waving flag became the main motion in animation. The heraldic shapes have their own separate motion in the moving flag.

Marieke den Ouden is a designer living in Arnhem. During her studies in graphic and social design at the Willem de Kooning Academy, she looked at the relationship between the Netherland’s clothing industry, consumerism, and graphic design.

Photography is an important aspect in her work, and wherever she goes - the camera goes too. Can’t find Marieke on land? Probably because she’s sailing across the ocean on a pirate ship, teaching youngsters about sustainability
